To me, to you

I was amazed to read this morning that the Chuckle Brothers are celebrating 20 years of their BBC children's show Chucklevision. I'm not sure what's more surprising - the fact that I'm old enough to remember their first appearance as 'Chucklehounds' in 1987, or that they're still making children laugh 20 years later.
If you've never seen their show (where have you been?), the format is very simple. Paul Chuckle explains (on BBC News): "The gags and the funnies, the falling on your backside or walking into a door or into a lamppost is age-old comedy ... As people get older they get talked into what they think should be funny by their peers ...You can't do that with kids. You can't tell kids what is funny. They tell you."
This is classic children's comedy at its best, and that's why it still works. They haven't tried to move with the times or make their gags more sophisticated. They just do what they've always done, and it makes children laugh. It still makes me laugh sometimes, if I'm honest.
I won't attempt to shoehorn some deep philosophical point into this story. It's not needed. The joy of the Chuckle Brothers is their simple humour. But perhaps there is something we can learn from them... Maybe it's to take life a bit less seriously, and to rediscover the joy of laughing like we did when we were kids, without thinking too hard about why.

I really like these three new publications as practical resources in our postmodern spiritual age. So many are spiritually searching, often as spiritual tourists seeking for deeper meaning and wisdom, so I love this with the view, that drawing on Christian wisdom, such resources enables people to become more human.
