I'm getting married... (thank you....in anticipation of your congratulations!) My fiance and I have recently begun the process of putting together a list of invitees for the big event. It has fascinated me that this has become an exercise in explaining who people are and what they mean to each of us... or our parents... or someone else already on the list.

Clearly, our lives are an intricate pattern of inter-connections and complex relationships. Nothing new there... but the extent to which this is true and the impact this has on my life, has been brought home to be through this activity.

James (the fiance!) has a large extended family and relatively few friends. No, he's not billy-no-mates, he just prefers a few very strong close friendships. I have a comparatively small family, but have over the years collected a large number of friends from a variety of contexts.

The explanations of who each person is... how long we have known them... who they're related to... how we met... and most importantly, what they mean to us now... is endlessly fascinating to me.

The significance of people, of all ages, who have seen each of us through a variety of rough patches or challenges, or who have shared a significant experience or journey, has encouraged us in our own relationship and touched our hearts as we prepare for our future life together.

I highly recomment the experience!
